Healthier Lunch Box Granola Bars

When  I got home last night I made the kids some of my homemade granola bars to pack as a snack for school.  These bars are so much better than store-bought bars mainly because you can pronounce all the ingredients and there’s a lot less sugar.  And BONUS….they’re nut free!


Healthier Lunch Box Granola Bars


  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup wheat germ
  • 1 Tsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract


1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees

2.  Grease 9×13  baking sheet

3.  In large bowl mix oats, brown sugar, wheat germ, cinnamon, flour, raisins and salt.

4. Make a well in the middle of oat mixture and add honey, eggs, oil and vanilla.  Mix with hands.

5. Pat mixture evenly in greased pan

6.  Bake for 30-35 minutes until bars begin to turn brown on the edges.  Let cool for 5 minutes and cut the bars while still warm.

    Yum…think I can substitute Sucanat for the brown sugar?

      Hmmmm good idea. I haven’t tried it in this recipe but I have tried substituting sucanat for brown sugar in other recipes. I’ll have to try it next time. My friend also used applesauce instead of the oil and said it worked.
